Raging Rivers

One of Chilean Patagonia's hallmarks is its beautiful rivers. So beautiful and so powerful that a battle is raging between those who wish to dam them up and those who wish to protect them.

At the heart of this battle is the stunning Rio Baker with its brilliant turquoise water, one of the most powerful rivers in the world, with an average flow rate of about 1200 cubic meters per second.

The Baker is hard to describe...words always seem to fall short, and even photos don't do much better.

For more information about what is happening with the rivers in Chilean Patagonia, check out the documentary film, Patagonia Rising or Rios to Rivers.

It's Alphabe-Thursday again, and, as you can see, another visit to Chilean Patagonia is on tap, since we're ruminating over the remarkable letter R.  Be sure to stop by Mrs. Jenny's to see what the other Alphabetarians are up to.

Fabulous Fall

Are you tired of my fall fanaticism yet? Well, I hope not. The brilliant fall colors come and go all too fast for my liking, so I'll be grabbing them while I can. Might as well just sit back and enjoy it with me.

Imagine...

There's a big fire burning somewhere near Boise, ID. The smoke has settled along the Wasatch front in UT...and in our beautiful valley. Nonetheless, the fall colors are in full swing. Can you imagine what this might look like were it not such a smoky day?

Do You Love Fall Like I Love Fall?

Who wouldn't like to wake up to this view on a Monday morning? Or any morning, for that matter?

It seems that I'm not the only one who thinks it's pretty cool to find such beautiful colors right outside our door.

Words Words Words

There are times when words can be puzzling.
And times when they are clear.
Times when they comfort.
And times they endear.

Words can cut like a newly honed knife.
At times they can destroy a fragile life.
Words can incite, excite and invite.
They can be just enough to start a fight.

The right words at the right moment can be a delight.
At times, though, it is best to let words rest for the night.

It's been a tough week in the world. Violence. Hatred. Misunderstanding. Anger. Vitriol. Ah, if only men would learn to use the power of words in a more compassionate, caring and loving way, wouldn't we all be so much better off?

Another Saturday Centus. The prompt is in red above. Be sure to stop by Mrs. Jenny's and see what the other Centusians are puzzling over.

p.s. sometimes images can be puzzling too....like when there is no rhyme or reason. It's OK...there doesn't always have to BE rhyme or reason.

Quintessential Patagonia

The beauty of Chilean Patagonia is often hard to describe but once you've seen it, you never forget it. This week for Alphabe-Thursday, where we honor the quirky letter Q,  I'll try to show you some of the qualities of this exquisite land that are quintessentially Patagonia. I think you'll see what I mean...

The dramatic skies...

 The wide open spaces...

 The windswept landscapes...
The ruggedness of the towering mountains...

The gem-like colors of the water...

The golden poplars (los alamos) in the fall...

The vibrant rainbows seen almost daily...

The roads that are intertwined with river beds...

The sunsets and wind-sheered lenticular clouds...
The soft sunrises...

The ever-present caracaras...

The swift and powerful rivers...
The jagged mountain tops....
The glacier covered mountain giants...
The lush bogs that fill the glacial cut valleys and fjords...

The majestic scenes that defy description and inspire awe and wonder.
This is quintessential Patagonia that I know and love.
